Easy to fix oil leak?

I got my "new" '97 Savage last night. I finally feel like part of the club! (Not that I'm riding it yet.) I was looking for the oil level window and noticed quite a bit of oil on the front right of the engine dripping down the cooling fins. Of course, I know exactly what the problem is thanks to all the helpful posts on the topic.
Now, I know there have been a million posts about that pesky oil leak, but my question is this: I have never worked on a bike before but I figure the Savage isn't a bad place to start. Is this repair a fairly simple one for someone who has never tried to fix/maintain a bike before? Or should I just take it to the shop rather than try to fix it myself? I don't want to botch the job but if you guys think it's straightforward, I wouldn't mind giving it a shot.

Intrudn: Where can I get this new type of plug that has the metal band? Would my local Suzuki shop carry it and will they know what I'm talking about? Also, it's been mentioned that the plug needs to be "gooped up" thoroughly to prevent future leaking. What specific type of "goop" would I need?
